The clinical significance of human alpha-fetoprotein.

چکیده
Deviations from the normal of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) concentrations in fetal serum, amniotic fluid, maternal serum and adult human serum can be explained by understanding the normal physiology and the pathophysiology of AFP synthesis and metabolism. AFP is the prototype of oncofetal markers. Emphasis is given to the usefulness of elevated serum AFP levels on the diagnosis and management of primary hepatomas and tumors of germ cell origin. The ability to detect neural tube defects early in gestation by monitoring maternal serum and amniotic fluid AFP concentrations is discussed.

MONOCLONAL ANTIBODIES TO HUMAN ALPHA-FETOPROTEIN
Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), a serum glycoprotein belonging to the onco-developmental proteins group, serves as a marker both in cancer research and in studies concerning fetal development and fetal pathophysiology. Monoclonal anti-AFP antibodies are essential reagents in developing appropriate techniques for measurement of this protein. In this study, in order to produce anti-AFP monoclonal a...
متن کاملReactivity of amniotic fluid alpha-fetoprotein with concanavalin A in relation to gestational age: clinical implications.
We used concanavalin A crossed-line affinity immunoelectrophoresis to determine the percentage of concanavalin A nonreactive alpha-fetoprotein in amniotic fluid samples from pregnancies with normal and abnormal fetuses. In 167 samples from pregnancies with a normal outcome and normal values for total alpha-fetoprotein concentration in amniotic fluid the percentage decreased from a median value ...
متن کاملCytomorphological Patterns of Nodular Lesions of Liver
Background and Objectives: Nodular lesions of liver are usually neoplastic (primary or metastatic), although inflammatory lesions can occur. The objectives of this paper were to study the cytomorphological changes in various nodular lesions of liver and to correlate the cytomorphological findings with biochemical parameters especially serum alpha-fetoprotein. Materials & Methods: A cross-sect...
متن کاملDevelopment of Simple Protocol for Generation of Functionally Active Hepatocyte-like Cells from Human Adipose Tissue-derived Stem Cells
Background and Aims: Human adipose tissue-derived stem cells (hASCs) are considered as an attractive source of regenerative stem cells, mainly because of their higher proliferation rate, more accessibility and hepatocyte like properties as compared to mesenchymal stem cells isolated from other tissues. Numerous studies have described the beneficial use of adipose tissue-derived stem cells for g...
متن کاملComparing PET metabolic parameters with clinicopathological factors in predicting onset of early recurrence in recently diagnosed hepatocellular carcinoma
Introduction: Early recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a major risk factor affecting survival even after hepatectomy. Many clinical, biochemical parameters and pathological grading like fibrosis 1 index have been used for risk stratifying HCC. However not many studies have combined all of them. It is therefore important to risk stratify HCC especially with newer PE...
